Well, I'm home. Finally.
I got back on Friday morning and slept for 3 days so I'm sorry I haven't been on earlier. Man, that's a long drive, especially when you get food poisoning in West Virginia. Nothing like pulling over on an interstate to throw up. lol
It was a grueling but rewarding trip, as always. I actually ended up spending all my time in New Orleans. Gustav hit the shelters there pretty hard. Noone was allowed into Texas (it's a long story and one I'm not at liberty to discuss). Others that I was with went on to work in the hard hit areas of Southeast Louisiana but I went where my skills and help where most needed.
I worked with a group called Muttshack rebuilding a horse shelter that was actually destroyed during Katrina and just now has the money to rebuild properly. Then I went on to ARNO (Animal Rescue New Orleans) which is a group I've been corresponding with for years. It was actually the place I had intended to go in the spring but had to put off for personal reasons. Half their shelter was utterly destroyed by Hurricane Gustav. They can't take any more animals in until it is finished being repaired which leaves New Orleans without a 'No-kill' shelter.
I think I've slept enough now but unfortunately I was bitten by a kitten (yes, a kitten) while I was there. She bite me near my mouth and it got infected (of course!). So, unless you want to kiss me while I look like I have a cold sore (or not kiss me at all), you'll have to wait a bit longer to see me!
Little thing was only playing but ouch!

You're absolutly right. I should have at least given it a shot. Instead, I sat on my Butt and waited for the expert to get back. Your trip certainly sounds daunting. That's a huge endeavor. And I'm always amazed that you manage to raise the funds to finance your whole trip yourself. You will certainly get a star in heaven for your selfless commitment. Did you get any pictures?
